se, dalla mia cessazione di servizio, sono dismessi il mio sito

thus this “peace initiatives” page, too, I wish to
publish here an interview I had with Melissa Kandel of the Medill
News Service in May of 2012.
The
occasion was the vibrant “No to NATO” protest in
Chicago on 20-5-2012, during the historic 25th NATO summit. While
big, said Melissa, the protest was nothing like the anti-war
demonstrations of the 1970's: What are the causes of the

VI Anniversario dell'Occupazione illegale dell'Iraq

Cinque
anni fa dovevamo piangere i morti italiani a Nasiriya.
L'odio della gente contro i “fanatici islamici” era
immenso; nessuno ascoltava Fabio Alberti (dell'ONG “Un
Ponte per...”) quando scriveva che le truppe italiane
erano in Iraq, non per portare la democrazia e gli aiuti
umanitari, ma per mettere le mani su alcuni pozzi di petrolio –
che sarebbero la mazzetta per i servizi resi all'occupazione
(ossia, le retate e le torture praticate contro i civili iracheni
che, in quella zona, protestevano l'occupazione straniera).
Anche questo blog, proprio all'inizio dell'occupazione
(v. il pezzo del 30.1.04 qui sotto), denunciava l'impiego delle
truppe italiane per fare le retate di civili iracheni, consegnati
poi alla tortura nella base italiana situata a due passi dai
pozzi promessi all'ENI.
Nessuno ci credeva. “Gli
americani vanno in Iraq forse per il petrolio, ma noi italiani
no, siamo lì per portare aiuti umanitari,” mi si
ripeteva in continuazione.
Poi il camion imbottito di
tritolo che ha fatto saltare in aria parte della base e chiudere
le celle di tortura.
Quanta sofferenza! Da
una parte e dall'altra.
Ma la storia ci ha insegnato
qualcosa?
Apparentemente no. La gente continua a
ripetere: “Ma LORO sono stati i primi ad usare la violenza,
contro le Torri Gemelle.” Balle. Se la gente leggesse
la storia, scoprirebbe che l'attacco del 11.9.01 è stata
la protesta (crudele e sbagliata) di Bin Laden ed altri sauditi,
contro anni di tortura subiti dai loro parenti in Arabia Saudita
da parte degli USA, per garantirsi il petrolio (sin dal 1946).
Proprio come il massacro di Nasiriya è stato la risposta
(crudele e sbagliata) degli iracheni all'occupazione e alle
retate dei soldati italiani. I primi a fare atti di
terrorismo siamo stati noi.
Ora si parla di potenziare la
presenza italiana in Afghanistan. Ma perché mandare
le truppe lì? Per la sicurezza e contro il
terrorismo? Per portare aiuti umanitari? Qualcuno crede
ancora a queste bugie? E quale sarà la risposta
degli afghani? Qualcuno ha un dubbio questa volta?
Qualcuno pensa di poter affermare che i fanatici siano LORO e non
NOI per prima?
Lo stesso discorso vale
per i “problemi di sicurezza” DENTRO casa nostra oggi
“a causa degli immigrati”. La TV ci fa vedere i
crimini e il degrado LORO, quasi mai lo sfruttamento NOSTRO a
monte, cioè le nostre pratiche schiavistiche che generano
risentimento e violenza. Quando impareremo la
lezione?
L'unico
modo per avere la sicurezza è la pace.
L'unico modo per
avere la pace è la giustizia.
Fuori le
truppe italiane (e occidentali) dall'Afghanistan!
Uguali
condizioni di lavoro per gli extracomunitari!

6th Anniversary of the illegal Occupation of Iraq

Five
years ago the tragic deaths of 19 Italians at Nasiriyah.
And an immense outburst of hatred against the “fanatic
Islamics.” No one listened to
Fabio Alberti (from the NGO “Un ponte per....”)
when he wrote that the Italian troops were in Iraq, not to bring
democracy and humanitarian aid, but to grab a few oil wells, the
loot for their services to the occupying forces (i.e., rounding
up for torture innocent Iraqi civilians whose only crime was to
protest the occupation of their country).
This blog, too,
at the very beginning of the occupation (see the article below
dated 30.1.04), condemned the use of Italian troops to raid Iraqi
homes to furnish victims for the torture cells in the base right
next to the oil wells promised to ENI.
No one listened.
“Maybe the Americans are in Iraq for the oil, but we
Italians are certainly not: we're there to bring humanitarian
aid,” people told me over and over.
Then the
truck went off, loaded with TNT, destroying part of the base and
closing the torture cells.
What immense suffering!
On both sides!
Has history taught us anything?
Apparently
not. People around me continue to repeat: “But THEY
were the first to use violence, against the Twin Towers.”
Rubbish. If only people would study their history, they
would discover that 9-11 was the (cruel and wrong-headed)
protest, by Bin Laden and other Saudis, against years of torture
that the U.S. had inflicted on their people in Saudia Arabia
(from 1946 on). Just like the massacre at Nasiriyah was the
(cruel and wrong-headed) protest, by Iraqi insurgents, against
the occupation and torture attributed to the Italian forces.
We Westerners have been the first to use terror.
Now we
hear about increasing Western presence in Afghanistan. Why
all the troops? To ensure our safety? To fight terrorism?
To bring humanitarian aid? Does anyone believe these lies any
more? And what will the Afghans' response be? Does
anyone have any doubts any more? Does anyone have the gall
to affirm that THEY are the fanatics who throw the first stone?
The same principle holds for “the problem of
safety” at home because of “all those immigrants.”
TV reports show us THEIR crimes and THEIR squalid living
conditions, almost never OUR exploitation of them. practically as
slaves, in conditions that breed hostility and violence.
When will we learn?
Our
only safety is in peace.
There can be no peace without
justice.
Bring the troops home from Afghanistan!
Equal
working conditions for immigrants!

Salve,
gente,
Oggi, il 1^ gennaio 2009, il
centro nevralgico dell'occupazione statunitense dell'Iraq, la
Zona Verde, è passato sotto il controllo del governo
iracheno. Avremmo potuto immaginare una cosa simile un anno
fa? Neanche per sogno. Inoltre le truppe americane
non possono più perquisire le case o arrestare i cittadini
senza un ordine giudiziario iracheno. Se un soldato o
mercenario USA commette un reato fuori servizio, sarà
processato dagli iracheni. Questo potere non ce l'ha
nemmeno il governo italiano sulle truppe USA in Italia!
Tutto
ciò significa, direi, che la guerra è finita.
L'ho detto due mesi fa, quando queste regole per il “cambio
della guardia” sono state firmate insieme
all'autorizzazione agli USA di stare in Iraq per altri 3 anni.
L'accordo sembra una
proroga della presenza USA, ma nei fatti è una
CAPITOLAZIONE. Proprio così. La
guerra è finita. Hanno vinto gli iracheni.
La proroga di 3 anni è una pezza per salvare
la faccia. Le ostilità cesseranno ben prima del termine
dei tre anni.
Spero di aver ragione su quell'ultimo punto.
Incrociamo le dita.
In ogni modo, è pur vero che
c'è poco da stare allegri in altre parti del mondo.
Eppure... eppure... sento un sollievo.
Sarà
l'ottimismo del nuovo anno, ma mi sembra che l'attacco d'Israele
contro Gaza, brutale quanto criminale (v. le violazioni degli
accordi di Ginevra), è solo un ultimo tentativo frenetico
prima dell'insediamento di Obama (e Clinton). Se ciò è
vero significa che, malgrado il sostegno degli israeliani a
Hillary, essi si rendono conto che tra un mese avranno le mani
legate. Non solo, ma Israele ha già fallito nel suo
tentativo di far attaccare l'Iran dagli USA. (Le navi
americane sono sempre a largo delle coste, ma il battage
propagandistico è cessato.)
In quanto
all'Afghanistan, sto scommettendo che il forte aumento delle
truppe lì sia solo il preludio ad un'altra capitolazione.
Insomma, l'EU e gli USA stanno consolidando i “loro”
terreni mentre sono già avviati i negoziati con i Talibani
per strappare da loro una cessione solo parziale dei territori
dove passeranno gli oleodotti dall'Asia centrale.
Cosa
significa, allora? E' stato sconfitto l'imperialismo?
Altro che! I petrolieri e i fabbricanti d'armi
continueranno a spingere per una politica estera USA basata sulla
forza. Ma hanno perso questo round. Leccano le
ferite. Accetteranno quindi che si cambia. Al posto
della guerra guerreggiata, i mezzi della Guerra Fredda. Al
posto dei soldati, il sabotaggio economico, le operazioni
clandestine, le insurrezioni e via discorrendo. Ma almeno
cesseranno le enormi stragi quotidiane di civili e la folle
distruzioni delle case de delle infrastrutture. I
bombardieri torneranno nelle aviorimesse.
E ciò è
una vittoria, come no!
Una vittoria per i movimenti della
pace nel mondo intero, naturalmente. Ma ancora di più
per i popoli coraggiosi che, anno dopo anno, hanno resistito al
NOSTRO terrorismo (già! “La guerra è il
terrorismo dei paesi ricchi”). Hanno resistito con
ogni mezzo a loro disposizione, comprese operazioni militari e
d'intelligenza estremamente sofisticate, oltre ad un acume
politico secondo a nessuno. Con ciò non sto
approvando il ricorso alla violenza. Ma riconosco che, a
lungo andare, è ciò che ci ha dato rilevanza tra la
gente comune.
Detto ciò, bisogna riconoscere che i
vari movimenti americani per la pace hanno sì influenzato
la politica estera di Bush, Cheney e Rice, non c'è
dubbio. Un altro nostro contributo importante è
stato quello di contribuire a (ri-)civilizzare gli Stati Uniti,
così imbarbariti da Bush e i mass media – e anche
l'Italia (dal momento che siamo attivi qui), così
imbarbarita da Berlusconi e i media suoi. Contro tutta la
loro propaganda per le “guerre preventive,” le
occupazioni imperialiste, la politica occhio-per-occhio, abbiamo
fatto valere una verità semplice: la pace è l'unico
sistema di sicurezza che valga.
Naturalmente, i veri
educatori sono stati gli attivisti di organizzazioni come
Codepink, Winter
Soldier, P&J,
Answer e i siti
web come After Downing Street,
con i loro migliaia di visitatori. Ma il nostro è
stato un contributo importante a livello dei contatti
faccia-a-faccia, ad esempio con i turisti e residenti americani a
Roma. E' un mezzo di persuasione che riesce a far breccia
anche sui qualunquisti. Siamo stati in tutte le piazze di
Roma anche con bravate, abbiamo sviluppato i contatti tramite il
nostro sito web, abbiamo fatto riflettere con il nostro cine
forum, abbiamo fatto sentire a Washington la voce degli americani
di Roma con campagne fax e mediatiche.
Dal nostro ultimo
verbale risulta che questo ruolo più defilato
– quello di lavorare contro l'imbarbarimento
delle menti – sia quello che molti ritengono vada ampliato
ora. Io ci sto e spero che il nuovo anno ci troverà
sempre più impegnati nel promuovere la pace promuovendo la
giustizia.

not with a bang
but a whimper.

Hi,
everyone,
Today, January 1, 2009, the nerve center of the
U.S. occupation of Iraq, the Green Zone, has passed under the
control of the Iraqi government. Could we have imagined that a
year ago? Hardly. Moreover U.S. troops can no longer search Iraqi
homes or arrest Iraqi citizens without an Iraqi court order. And
U.S. soldiers and contractors can be prosecuted and punished by
the Iraqis if, while on leave, they commit offences in Iraqi
towns. Not even the Italian government has this last power over
U.S. troops in Italy!
For me this means the war is over,
as I mentioned two months ago when these "change of command"
clauses were signed in the deal authorizing U.S. presence in Iraq
for 3 more years. In fact, I see the protocol NOT
so much as PROLONGING
U.S. presence, as DECLARING
the terms of a CAPITULATION.
The war is over. The Iraqis have won.
The 3-extra-years tacked on are just a face-saver. The shooting
will be over long before the three years are up.
I do hope
I'm right on that last point. Fingers crossed.
In any
case, I realize that we have little to cheer about in other parts
of the world. And yet... And yet... I do feel good
cheer.
Maybe it is just the optimism of a New Year, but it
seems to me that even the current Israeli attack on Gaza, as
brutal as it is criminal (Geneva Convention violations), is a
last-ditch effort to gain ground before Obama-Clinton take
over... which implies that, despite AIPAC support for Hillary,
Israel feels that in less than a month it will have its hands
tied. And it has already lost out in its attempt to get the U.S.
to attack Iran. The U.S. Navy is still off the coast but the
preparatory propaganda barrage has stopped.
As for
Afghanistan, I am betting that the sharp increase in troops and
fighting there preludes another capitulation; thus, for the
moment, Europe and the U.S. are simply jostling for ground. In
fact, there is now open talk of negotiating with the Talibani and
accepting only partial control over the territory where the oil
pipelines from Central Asia will pass.
So does this mean
that imperialism has been defeated? By no means. Big oil and
weapons manufacturers will still call for confrontational foreign
policy but, licking their wounds, will perforce accept that it be
"carried on with other means." In other words, less
open warfare and more cold war tactics like economic sabotage,
covert operations, insurrections, etc. This should mean that the
huge slaughter of innocent civilians taking place today, together
with the mindless destruction of homes and infrastructure, will
relent. The attack bombers will go back into mothballs.
And
THAT is a victory.
A victory for the peace movements
throughout the world, of course. But even more for the courageous
indigenous peoples who, over the years, have resisted OUR
terrorism (for "War is the terrorism of rich countries").
And they have done so using every means at their disposition,
including very savvy military and intelligence operations, as
well as political acumen second to none. I am not condoning the
recourse to violence. But I recognize that it is what gave us
relevance, over time, in the minds of ordinary people.
That
being said, our various peace movements HAVE influenced
significantly our country's foreign policy, there can be no doubt
about that. AND we have made a another big difference: we
have helped to re-civilize our country as well (and Italy to boot
since, as USC4P&J, our activism is visible here). We have
successfully fought the barbarian mind-set that both Governments
(Bush, Berlusconi) and the mainstream mass media have encouraged
in our fellow citizens over the years, to justify the heinousness
of imperial "expansionism", "preventive"
warfare, eye-for-eye politics and so on.
Of course,
organizations like Codepink,
Winter Soldier,
P&J, Answer
or web sites like After
Downing Street with hundreds of thousands
of hits have really been the prime educators. But we, too, have
been really strong in grass-roots, interpersonal contact here in
Rome -- the kind that gets fence-striders to come down and take a
stand -- from our presence in the city squares to the publicity
stunts, web site reports, and discussions at our film series.
Plus we have been very effective in putting American citizens in
Rome on the peace map through massive faxing and photo-ops sent
back home to government and the media.
As I saw from the
minutes at the November meeting, it's this educational,
"civilizing" role that many said we should emphasize
now. I'm all for it and hope that 2009 will see us ever more
active in promoting peace through promoting justice.
